Fangor’s House and Studio to Join MCSW “Elektrownia”

On 2 September 2026, a notarial deed was signed in Błędów under which the Mazovian regional government acquired the house and studio of Wojciech Fangor and his wife, Magdalena Shummer-Fangor. The historic complex, housed in a former mill on the Mogielanka River and surrounded by a park, will become a new branch of the Mazovian Centre for Contemporary Art “Elektrownia”.

The handover ceremony was attended by Adam Struzik, Marshal of the Mazovian Voivodeship, and Rafał Rajkowski, Deputy Marshal. Both emphasised that acquiring the house in Błędów means preserving an important part of Mazovia’s heritage and creating the conditions for future generations to discover Wojciech Fangor’s work in its authentic context.

Wojciech Fangor settled in Błędów in 2000, after returning to Poland from nearly forty years of emigration in Europe and the United States. It was in the former mill that he created his last paintings and spatial works, and the interiors of the house and studio have retained their original character and furnishings to this day. As Wioletta Kotkowska, director of MCSW “Elektrownia”, says: “We want to tell the artist’s story through the space where he lived, worked and created, showing visitors lesser-known aspects of his work as well. In the future, the park surrounding the house will be expanded with an outdoor sculpture gallery and a modern exhibition pavilion.”

The artist’s family was represented by Piotr Patkowski, President of the FANGOR Foundation, who highlighted the emotional significance of the place: “My mother and Wojciech Fangor spent twenty years here. These interiors hold great sentimental value for me. I am entrusting this place to good hands. It will be a wonderful tribute to these two artists.”
